Group D of the 2024 T20 World Cup has lived up to its billing as the “Group of Death.” Apart from South Africa, no team has yet qualified for the Super 8. Bangladesh are the frontrunners to seal their berth, while Netherlands are in contention too, with Nepal being eliminated on Saturday. Here’s a breakdown of each team’s chances and the factors that will determine their fate:
T20 World Cup Qualification scenario for Group D to Super 8
Team | Matches | Wins | Points | NRR |
---|---|---|---|---|
South Africa | 4 | 4 | 8 (Q) | +0.470 |
Bangladesh | 3 | 2 | 4 | +0.478 |
Netherlands | 3 | 1 | 2 | -0.408 |
Nepal | 3 | 0 | 1 (E) | -0.293 |
Sri Lanka | 3 | 0 | 1 (E) | -0.777 |
South Africa (Q) (8 points, +0.470 NRR):
The Proteas recently became the first team to secure a Super 8s berth after beating Bangladesh in a low-scoring thriller. They have won all four of their games thus far and beat Nepal in their last Group D game.
Bangladesh (4 points, +0.478 NRR):
The Tigers have started their fight on a decent note. They beat Sri Lanka in their opening game but botched a comfortable run-chase against the Proteas. They were strong against Netherlands as well, making them favorites to become second team to qualify from this group. Shakib Al Hasan’s all-round brilliance and the experience of seasoned campaigners like Mustafizur Rahman and Litton Das will be crucial for their qualification hopes. They have only 1 game remaining against Nepal and if Bangladesh win that, they will be through.
Netherlands (2 points, -0.408 NRR):
The Dutch are known for their fighting spirit and ability to pull off upsets. They almost did one against the Proteas before David Miller’s sensational innings denied them. Their qualification path took a ‘U-Turn’ after their recent loss against Bangladesh. A strong NRR boost is also important for them in a tie-breaker scenario. They desperately need Bangladesh to lose their last game.
Nepal (E) (1 point, -0.293 NRR):
The debutants surprised many with their spirited performance against the Netherlands. However Nepal lost their opening game and the second game against Sri Lanka was washed away due to incessant rain. A narrow one-run loss to giants South Africa meant that their campaign is now officially over.
Sri Lanka (E) (1 point, -0.777 NRR):
The former champions became the latest team to get knocked out of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. The Wanindu Hasaranga-led lost their two games against South Africa and Bangladesh. However, the destiny made them suffer hard after their match against Nepal got washed out. Sri Lanka needed the match between Netherlands and Bangladesh to get washed out, which ultimately didn’t happen.
