With the schedule for the T20 World Cup 2024 out, it is confirmed that 16 of the 55 matches will be played in the USA. While some may think that a sizeable chunk of the money and matches have been given to the West Indies, one has to look at the growth of cricket in non-existent markets.
Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar iterated the same. Talking about what the ICC and T20 World Cup 2024 need to do to make cricket a big hit in the USA, Gavaskar said:
“The matches that will be played in America, if they are interesting and we see last ball finishes, people in America will be thinking, What sport is this? This is better than baseball; we should be taking an interest in this sport.”
However, Gavaskar claimed that for cricket to be a success in the USA, they’ll need a strong national team that will make the public watch and support them.
If you want to create a market in America, you need a strong local (or national) team. That way, you’ll see an increase in eyeballs, and people will be saying, How good is the USA team playing?”
