- India’s squad for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa was announced on Sunday with Shikhar Dhawan being named as the captain.
- While it was expected that none of the players, including the reserve players for the T20 World Cup will find their names in the squad, the selectors have surprisingly named Shreyas Iyer, who is one of the reserve players for the World Cup as the vice-captain.
- The 16-member squad also has Deepak Chahar, Mohammed Siraj and Ravi Bisnoi.
The ODI series is scheduled to begin from 6th October at Lucknow, on the same date when players who are part of the main squad for the T20 World Cup are scheduled to leave for Australia. With the Super 12 stage of the World Cup scheduled to begin from 22nd October, the early departure of the Indian squad will help in acclimating to the Australian conditions and time zones.
Team India is set to play Australia in the first T20 World Cup warm-up match on October 17. Before the start of the warm-up matches, India will begin their preparations with intra-squad practice matches. Meanwhile, for the upcoming ODI series, VVS Laxman will take over the duties as the interim head coach as Rahul Dravid will be unavailable as he is se to travel with the squad to Australia.
