T20 WC 2023: Women’s cricket in India has reached a turning point over the past several weeks. Women’s cricket grabbed headlines for all the right reasons, whether it was the Women’s Premier League (WPL) grand opening, which saw the five franchises purchased for Rs 4,669 crore, or the Indian side winning the first-ever Under-19 World Cup. The Women’s World Cup, which will begin in South Africa, will continue to make headlines. Former India captain Mithali Raj, while talking to Indian Express said that we have reached a stage where reaching the knockouts is not enough. Follow Women’s T20 World Cup LIVE updates with InsideSport.IN

“This U-19 World Cup title showed there is talent at that level. The potential is so much that it can be groomed and in a couple of years or three years with the WPL, we can say Australia – who have been dominant through the years – have a serious contender. Earlier, people used to say there is not much of a talent pool. And I would say at the senior level, there is a limited talent pool. But with the WPL and franchises coming in, the scouting will start and parents will also get assurance that even at Under-19 level, their kids can represent India,” she said

“Yes. We have reached a stage where reaching the knockouts is not enough. If you were to compare ourselves with the rest of the world other than Australia and England or even New Zealand, there are other teams who are at a stage where we were a few years back. If we are getting all the facilities — hike in match fees, getting the camps we required and going early to acclimatise, then yes. The expectations will once increase. People will not be content with just playing the semi-finals and final. They will be expected to win,” she added.

India has only experienced heartbreak in the major ICC competitions. Even in the just concluded Women’s T20 Tri-series that was played in South Africa, the Women in Blue had a tremendous run up until the final, where they were defeated by South Africa. Harmanpreet Kaur & co made it to the finals of the most last T20 World Cup but were defeated by the mighty Australians. The women in blue will attempt to buck that tendency in the T20 World Cup 2023.
