Yashasvi Jaiswal: Former India player Wasim Jaffer believes Yashasvi Jaiswal needs to be included in the Test team for the upcoming two-match series against West Indies. The southpaw created quite a stir in IPL 2023, scoring over 600 runs for Rajasthan Royals (RR). Jaiswal was also part of the WTC Final squad as a reserve player. However, Jaffer opines Jaiswal is ready to play the longest format as he has been extremely prolific run scorer.
Jaiswal is expected to play at the crucial number three spot for India in place of Cheteshwar Pujara. Even if the Southpaw does not make an immediate impact against West Indies, the RR batter has got all the skills and talent to become India’s long-term number three.
“Yashasvi Jaiswal is definitely one of them. He has been a very prolific scorer across formats, whether you talk about the IPL, domestic cricket, or India A cricket. I think he needs to be a part of the squad,” Wasim Jaffer was quoted as saying by Sportskeeda.
Yashasvi Jaiswal primed to replace Cheteshwar Pujara for WI Test series
Yashasvi Jaiswal: Wasim Jaffer feels Jaiswal should be groomed for the future
While Jaiswal did not feature in WTC final due to presence of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill as openers, Jaffer believes that the youngster should be persisted with for the West Indies tour and groomed for the future. With Pujara not crossing 30 in both innings of WTC final against Australia, selectors are contemplating including young players ahead of the next WTC cycle.
Jaiswal is off to a rollicking start in the First-class career as he has scored 1845 runs at a phenomenal average of 80.21 in 15 matches. The southpaw has struck nine centuries and two half-centuries.
“He was given an opportunity as well this time. He was a part of the team but Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma were playing, so obviously he didn’t get a chance. I feel he should be kept along with the team so that he can be groomed, and as and when an opportunity comes, he should get a chance,” Jaffer added.
