Sussex re-sign Indian ace Cheteshwar Pujara for third consecutive season

Pujara will be available to play in their opening seven County Championship fixtures

Sussex has confirmed the re-signing of India right-handed batter Cheteshwar Pujara for the 2024 English domestic cricket season, Sussex County Cricket Club announced on Wednesday.

Pujara will join Sussex for the third consecutive season. He will be available to play in their opening seven County Championship fixtures. The 28-year-old played his last Test for India in the final of the World Test Championship against Australia in June. In 18 County Championship games for Sussex, he has scored 1863 runs at an impressive 64.24. His Sussex stint is laced with eight centuries and three fifties.

“I have enjoyed my time at Hove the last couple of seasons and couldn’t be more delighted to be back again with the Sussex family. I am looking forward to joining the team and contributing to its success,” said Pujara in a statement.

He scored his highest Sussex score of 231 against Derbyshire in 2022, when he and Tom Haines shared a partnership of 351. Haines also went on to score a double century in that match. In 2023, he scored his highest score of 151 against Hampshire. His innings was studded with 20 fours and 2 sixes.

“I am delighted that Cheteshwar is returning to Hove again for the first two months of the season. He is not just a high-quality player but is also a high-quality person. His experience and calmness in matches is a fantastic asset for our team,” said Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace.

Pujara will be joined by Australian duo of Daniel Hughes and Nathan McAndrew, and West Indies fast-bowler Jayden Seales as the overseas signings of Sussex in 2024.
