Suryakumar Yadav & Tilak Varma could follow Yashasvi Jaiswal in joining Goa for 2025-26 domestic season

Suryakumar Yadav like Yashasvi Jaiswal plays for Mumbai while Tilak Varma is the current Hyderabad captain.

As if the news of Yashasvi Jaiswal leaving the Mumbai cricket team for the Goa cricket team wasn’t enough, we are now hearing that Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma might join the talented opener as well. Surya plays for Mumbai as well and is the mainstay in their side. Meanwhile, Tilak is the captain of his domestic side, the Hyderabad cricket team.

Goa’s hunt for superstars

According to the Times of India, the Goa Cricket Association (GCA) has been approaching multiple players from all across the country to join the team for the upcoming 2025-26 season.

“We are currently in talks with many players from the country. I can’t give you a name right now. We will be finalising other professional players soon,” said GCA Secretary Shambha Desai.

Yashasvi Jaiswal confirmed to leave Mumbai

Jaiswal was approached a few days back by the GCA, and according to the board, he has already asked for an NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). This confirmed that his playing days for Mumbai are over for now, and he’ll don the Goa kit in the coming months.

“We reached out to Jaiswal some 8-10 days back; he got back to us after thinking over it, and now that he has asked for a NOC, the formalities and the required paperwork will be completed,” Desai added.

Why Tilak Varma & Suryakumar Yadav?

Suryakumar isn’t the current Mumbai captain, but he’s one of the selected few who’ve led the team across formats in domestic cricket. The same goes for Tilak, who, despite being just 22 years old, has led Hyderabad in 74 matches.

As Desai has mentioned, both aren’t the only players that GCA has approached. But one can’t forget that Suryakumar is the current India cricket team T20I captain. As for Tilak, he’s already a mainstay in the T20I team and has played ODIs for India as well.

Goa looking for glory

For the unaware, Goa, who were in the Plate League of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25, won all five of their matches and have been promoted to the Elite League. The move suggests Goa wants to lift their maiden Ranji Trophy title and contend for other Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) domestic tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
