Ranji Trophy 2022-23: SuryaKumar Yadav Ranji – India middle-order batsman Suryakumar Yadav isn’t leaving any opportunity to play competitive cricket. SuryaKumar Yadav will be available to play Mumbai’s second Ranji Trophy game scheduled for December 20 against Hyderabad in Mumbai.

Surya has informed us that he will be available for the second Ranji Trophy game. The selection committee today picked the squad for the first Ranji Trophy game (Vs Andhra) which will be led by Ajinkya Rahane,” MCA honorary secretary Ajinkya Naik told a newspaper daily.

SKY’s availability comes as a massive boost for Mumbai, who has been in tremendous form in the white-ball format. He has been rested for the tour to Bangladesh. However, looks like he is no mood to rest for a long periods of time.

The Mumbai batsman has had a glorious run with the bat off late. He returned home some time ago after being away for the past 75 days on India duty. Indian selectors opted to give him rest from the Bangladesh tour. This doesn’t mean that he will rest right through the period. He wants to make the most of the form he is in at the moment.

Suryakumar Yadav’s message is clear to the  Mumbai selectors. He is available to play Ranji Trophy.

SKY on STANDY-BY for Bangladesh Tests

A major reason behind SKY opting to represent Mumbai is his desire to play Test cricket for India. During the T20 World Cup in Australia, Surya made it crystal clear that he wants to play all three formats for India. Given the form he is in at the moment, it is hard to deny him a spot in the Test squad.

“When we start playing cricket we start with red ball and I have also played first-class cricket for my Mumbai team…it was quite okay, so I have a fair idea about the Test format and I enjoy playing that format also. Hopefully, I will get the Test cap soon,” SKY said in a post-match conference.

There are reports doing the rounds, that SKY is likely to be added to the Test squad for the Bangladesh Series. If this happens, he needs to be in the best shape possible.

With no competitive games available, Yadav has expressed his desire to play domestic cricket once more. He had been sensational throughout the T20 World Cup, where his ability to play shots all over the field made him the tournament’s most dangerous player.

Yadav joined the Indian team after the World Cup in Australia to play three T20Is and three ODIs in New Zealand. In the first T20I against New Zealand, he hit an unbeaten 111 off 51 balls. And his presence is expected to provide a significant boost to the Mumbai team.

Yadav has 5326 runs from 77 first-class matches at an average of 44.01 and a highest score of 200 since his debut against Gujarat in 2010. He has 14 centuries, 26 50s, 756 boundaries, and 52 sixes to his name, with a reasonable strike rate of 62.68.

Ajinkya Rahane to lead Mumbai

Mumbai will have not shortage of experience, as they will have Ajinkya Rahane leading the side. The senior selection committee of Mumbai Cricket Association headed by Salil Ankola announced its 17-members squad for the first Ranji Trophy game.

Apart from Rahane, Mumbai boasts a star-studded batting line up with Prithvi Shaw, Yashasvi Jaiswal as openers and Sarfaraz Khan in the middle order. Jaiswal and Khan are currently in Bangladesh for the India A tour and will be returning home next week.

Mumbai will have the SKY power this time around, even though if it is for some matches as he is expected to don the national duty, sooner rather than later.

The selection committee has also picked 17-year-old left-arm spinner and batsman Musheer Khan, younger brother of Sarfaraz, after his big showing in junior cricket. Khan was rewarded Mumbai’s berth after he scored 172 runs in 113 balls against Jammu & Kashmir during the under-25 one day tournament recently.

Squad for first Ranji game: Ajinkya Rahane (Captain), Prithvi Shaw, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Armaan Jaffer, Sarfaraz Khan, Suved Parkar, Hardik Tamore, Prasad Pawar, Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Tushar Deshpande, Mohit Awasthi, Siddharth Raut, Roystan Dias, Suryansh Shedge, Shashank Attarde, Musheer Khan.
