SuryaKumar Yadav has accepted that his ODI numbers are very poor. The World No 1 T20I batter SKY had a woeful start to his ODI career, and he has ‘no shame’ in admitting it ahead of the World Cup 2023.
Suryakumar Yadav led the visitors to a seven-wicket victory over the West Indies on Tuesday in the third Twenty20 match with a 44-ball 83 after both of India’s openers were out early.
India responded at Providence Stadium with 164/3 while chasing 160. Suryakumar Yadav was awarded man of the match thanks to his heroics.
In the post-game press conference, Suryakumar Yadav spoke about his innings and stated: “I did nothing unusual. Simply by expressing myself, everything continued falling into place as I batted.”
Yadav promptly corrected the reporter when he was asked if he had lost out on a potential third hundred, saying, “First of all, I would like to inform you it would have been my fourth hundred. (laughs).”
“On the other hand, I never consider milestones. I always play in accordance with the demands of my squad, whether I am on 47 or 98. In order to attain the goal, I hit sixes or fours. I fulfill the needs of my team,” he continued.

With the ODI World Cup 2023 approaching, Yadav discussed his average performance in the 50-over format. He only managed to record scores of 19, 24, and 35 in the three games of the ODI series against the Windies.
His ODI statistics are quite average when compared to his T20 career, and the right-hander was blunt about it as well. He has participated in 26 ODIs so far, recording 511 runs at an average of 24.33.
Suryakumar played 10 ODIs in 2023 and averaged just 14 runs per game.
He stated the following in reference to the same: “We have played many T20Is, so it’s become a habit. We frequently play T20, so all we need to do is be ourselves. However, we don’t play many one-day matches, and the ODI format is difficult. This is due to the fact that you must adapt your strategy to the game. For instance, if wickets fall early, you need to spend time in the middle (play like you’re playing Test cricket), then in the middle, run a ball, and finally, approach it like you’re playing a T20 game in the final stages.”
“I am now trying to follow and apply what the team management has told me regarding ODI cricket, which is to take my time before playing my game.”
“My performance in ODIs has been very poor, and recognizing that fact is not shameful. Being truthful is crucial. You haven’t played this format much, according to Rohit and Rahul, so you should give it some thought. If you are batting in the final 15 to 18 overs, we want you to play 45 to 50 balls, and you bat accordingly,” he said.
“Now it’s up to me to figure out how to make this duty into an opportunity and how to help the team succeed,” he continued.
