The return of premier MI batsman Suryakumar Yadav is set to be delayed by a few more days. As per a report in PTI, one of the best T20I batters in the world, Surya is still recovering from a sports hernia operation. He is still at the NCA, where his rehab is being taken care of.
“Surya is making very good progress and very soon he will be back playing for MI. However, he might have to sit out for a few more games, having missed the first two,” a BCCI source said.
Surya Important for T20 World Cup
Meanwhile, Surya is not just important from the context of the IPL 2024, but the upcoming T20 World Cup as well, that is scheduled to take place in June.
Even though MI is without Surya, the BCCI doesn’t want to take any chances regarding the big hitter’s health because he will likely be a key player in the forthcoming T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA in June.
“For BCCI, the main concern is if he is on course for World T20 which he is. Obviously he will play for MI but after a sports hernia surgery, he can’t be rushed,” the source said.
The SKY Effect
Till now, Surya has played 60 T20Is for India and scored 2141 runs at an average of 45, including 4 tons and 17 fifties. Apart from that, he has been an MI stalwart in every sense. He has played 139 matches for the franchise, and scored 3249 runs at an average of 31.
Mumbai has been missing him dearly in IPL 2024, as they have lost two in two. ON Wednesday, they lost a match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, while chasing a target of 278.
