Super 8 qualification scenario: What will happen if India vs Pakistan match gets washed out?

Let's say rain stops the India-Pakistan T20 World Cup match today. What happens then? How will it impact their chances of reaching the next stage?

The highly anticipated T20 World Cup clash between India and Pakistan is under a dark cloud, with rain threatening to wash out the match. With the toss already delayed, fans are anxious not just about the match itself, but also about the potential impact on both teams’ qualification for the Super 8 stage.

What happens if the IND vs PAK match gets washed out?

Since this is a group-stage encounter, the organizers haven’t assigned any reserve days. If the match gets rained out completely, both India and Pakistan will be awarded one point each. Moreover, there won’t any change in the Net Run Rate (NRR).

Qualification scenario for India

Even with a washout, India is likely to remain in second place in Group A, with three points from two games. However, they will trail the USA, who currently sit at the top with four points from two games. They will face the likes of USA and Canada in their next two games. If all goes well, the Rohit Sharma-led side will clinch both games and will seal a berth in the Super 8s with 7 points.

Qualification scenario for Pakistan

A washout would be a lifeline for Pakistan, who lost their opening match against the USA. With one point, they would be placed fourth in the group. Their qualification chances would then depend on the performance of other teams in the group, especially USA. Pakistan will of course need to win their remaining matches against Canada and Ireland. If the match against India produces a result and Pakistan end up losing, they would be all but out of the Super 8 race.
