Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has bashed the English Cricket Board (ECB) for requesting its players who are headed to the T20 World Cup to go home early. Gavaskar has recommended the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to penalize the boards and players.
Gavaskar seeks penalty
“I am all for players choosing country before anything else. But t hey have assured various franchises about their availability for the full season. If they pull out now, it will be letting down the franchises. The franchises probably pay them more money in one IPL season. They don’t earn that much in a few seasons with their country.” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-day.
“The franchises should deduct a substantial amount from the fee that the player was bought for. Moreover the Board should not be given the stated 10 per cent commission of the fee that each player gets.

“If the Board has gone back on its assurance they need to be penalised too. By the way, this 10 per cent commission to the Boards happens only in the IPL and nowhere else. Does the BCCI get any thanks for its generosity? Ha ha ha. No way,” Gavaskar said.
ECB’s statement
A few weeks prior, the ECB requested in a statement that a few chosen players report back to the national team for the May 22 home series against Pakistan. Rob Key, the managing director of the England team, revealed that Jos Buttler, the captain, pushed for the country’s players to sit out the IPL playoffs. The other players representing England in the ICC event squad are Buttler, Phil Salt, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, Jonny Bairstow, Moeen Ali, Will Jacks, and Reece Topley.
