Sunil Gavaskar UNHAPPY with Rohit Sharma, claims ‘Team not getting together’

Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his displeasure at Rohit Sharma's captaincy. He has claimed that lack of team bonding is crucial for team not performing well

‘No longer friends, but just colleagues’ is what Ravichandran Ashwin said recently. Taking a cue from the same, former Indian skipper and great Sunil Gavaskar has echoed his thoughts on the same. Gavaskar has gone on to say that the lack of bonding among the teammates is disappointing and can be a potential reason for the team not performing well.

“It’s a sad thing because you should be able to get together after play ends and maybe not talk about the game but talk about music, maybe talk about the films you like, maybe talk about your interest in space. But if that is not what is happening, that is disappointing. Having said that, the new thing that started 20 years back or longer is that every player gets a single room. That too can be a factor …” Sunil Gavaskar told The Indian Express.

Gavaskar has pointed out that maybe not talking about the normal things in life has led to a depleted bonding among the teammates. He also specified that since the start of the rule some 20 years ago where the players live in separate rooms can also be a reason for the downfall in team spirit and bonding.

India has been poor in major international tournaments off late. India lost in the top 4 in Asia Cup last year and then got out of the semis in the T20 World Cup. This year India was humiliated by Australia in the WTC Finals, which has certainly raised questions about the captaincy of Rohit Sharma.

‘No more money spinner’, ICC Meeting to discuss future of bilateral ODIs

While the Men In Blue continue to be beasts in bilateral series, the constant fumble in the International tournaments has put them under a spot of bother. Sunil Gavaskar has gone on to question Rohit Sharma’s captaincy since he took over the reins of the Indian team from Virat Kohli.

“I expected more from him (Rohit). In India it is different, but when you do well overseas that is really the test. That is where he has been a little disappointing. Even in the T20 format, with all the experience of the IPL, hundreds of matches as captain, with a mix of best IPL players not being able to get to the finals has been disappointing,” said Gavaskar.
