Today marks the silver jubilee of a monumental moment in Indian cricket history, as 25 years ago, legendary spinner and former India captain Anil Kumble achieved an extraordinary feat by capturing all 10 wickets in the fourth innings of the second Test against Pakistan at Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium.
Anil Kumble’s wife Chetana Kumble took to Instagram to wish the Indian spin maestro on the silver jubilee of his admirable feat.
“7/2/1999– 10/10!! 25 years of this epoch scripting feat! Such an honour to have witnessed this! Take a bow! @anil.kumble” she wrote on X.
Kumble’s remarkable performance single-handedly dashed Pakistan’s hopes of chasing down India’s target of 420 runs, as he bowled them out for 207 in 60.3 overs. His figures of 26.3-9-74-10 mirrored England’s Jim Laker’s iconic achievement and solidified his status as one of cricket’s greats.
While Laker’s feat came in a one-sided win over Australia and Ajaz Patel’s in a losing cause, Kumble’s effort was a game-changing performance etched in the memory of every Indian cricket enthusiast.
Pakistan’s promising chase began with openers Saeed Anwar and Shahid Afridi forming a century partnership. However, Kumble’s brilliance turned the tide, dismissing key batsmen and triggering a collapse. Despite a valiant effort from captain Wasim Akram, Kumble’s relentless bowling ensured India’s victory. His remarkable display of skill and determination remains a cherished moment in Indian cricket history.
