Had Rishabh Pant stayed on the wicket for a little longer, in the IND vs AUS 4th Test, probably Team India would have been in a much better situation. Despite batting well for his 28, Pant attempted a scoop shot on the bowling of Scott Boland, that took the edge, and went straight to the fielder at deep third man. As is the case so many times, the southpaw was left disbalanced, that played a major role in him edging the ball.
Sunil Gavaskar Unimpressed by Rishabh Pant
Rishabh Pant’s dismissal meant, that at one stage, the Indian team was reeling at 191/6. And evidently, former India opener and expert, Sunil Gavaskar wasn’t a happy man, seeing what had transpired. He castigated Pant on air, for putting the team in a tough situation. Such was his anger, that Gavaskar called the shot “stupid” thrice, while on commentary.
“Stupid, stupid, stupid”, said Gavaskar on ABC Sport. “You’ve got two fielders there and you still go for that (shot). You’ve missed the previous shot, and look where you’ve been caught. You’ve been caught at deep third man, that is throwing away your wicket. Not in the situation that India was, you have to understand the situation well.
“Stupid Shot” by Pant
“You cannot say, that is your natural game. I’m sorry. That is not your natural game. That is a stupid shot, and that is letting your team down badly,” Gavaskar concluded. It is worth mentioning that Rishabh Pant has been rather poor in the IND vs AUS series, where he has only scored 124 runs in 4 matches at an average of 20 only.
This is in complete contrast to what he had achieved in the IND vs AUS 2020-21 series. In the three matches then, he had scored 274 runs at an average of 68. He even had two fifties to his name.
