Former Pakistan pacer Mohammed Amir has suggested that Babar Azam should bat at number 3 and not open the innings. His remarks come after the ex-Pakistan skipper failed to break free from shackles of poor form despite being promoted as the opener. Rizwan had earlier explained that a “technically solid” Babar was the best option the side had for the top-order in the absence of Saim Ayub.
“Babar Azam should bat at number 3”
Ahead of the Champions Trophy, A Sports reported Amir likening his skills with the new ball to Babar batting at number 3. He said that Azam’s strength was at number 3 where he knew how to construct his innings. The former pacer reckoned that the ex-skipper should stick to his strengths despite struggling to find his golden touch again.
“As I’ve said before, if I don’t get to bowl with the new ball, I can’t fully utilize my strength. Similarly, Babar’s strength is at No. 3, where he knows how to construct an innings. Babar is a top player, no doubt, but I believe No. 3 is where he belongs. When you’re struggling, you try different things, but sometimes it’s best to stick to what works,” Amir said.

In three innings as opener for Pakistan in ODIs ahead of Champions Trophy, Babar only managed scores of 10, 23 and 29. His last century came in 2023 following which he has been pretty much out-of-form.
Earlier, Rizwan explained the logic behind promoting Babar as opener. The keeper-batter explained that the team preferred to deploy their most technically solid star at the top instead of throwing someone unversed in the deep end.
“His (Ayub’s) absence created a huge disturbance, and we went for the safety of Babar Azam, who’s our best batter. At the top, if the ball swings, he can control it,” Rizwan explained.
