“Will give a Porshe”: Lalit Modi explains how he offered to give luxurious car if someone hit 6 sixes in a row

Yuvraj Singh went on to tank 6 sixes against England in Durban in 2007

The Indian Premier League started way back in 2008 but its seeds were planted in 2007 when Yuvraj Singh went on to hammer 6 sixes in an over in the ICC T20 World Cup in Durban. But it has a back story. Lalit Modi revealed how he offered to give a Porshe car to someone who hit 6 sixes in an over or take 6 wickets in a row.

Back in the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup, Yuvraj Sigh stole the headlines by slamming Stuart Broad for six sixes in a row. Lalit Modi in a podcast counter, how he had previously told the India Cricket Team players that if anyone slams 6 sixes or gets 6 wickets in an over, Modi personally would gift that player a Porshe car.

Start of Something Beautiful

“Nobody has ever hit 6 sixes in an over, nobody has taken 6 wickets. Anybody who does that, I will give you a Porshe out of my own pocket, nothing to do with the BCCI. Everyone laughed, saying you gave us an impossible task,” Modi said.

“I was very friendly with the players since I was a part of the BCCI. And then one fine day, Yuvraj Singh blasts 6 sixes. And those 6 sixes is the start, is the IPL reality. It lit fire on Indian television, news channels repeated it, and Yuvraj came running to me on the field asking ‘where is my Porshe?’ I said give me the bloody bat,” Lalit Modi concluded.

Thus with those 6 historic sixes, the seeds of the foundation of the Indian Premier League were planted. A year later, it went on to become a reality. And cut to now, the IPL continues in full swing, becoming bigger and better than the previous year.
