Delhi Capitals went all guns blazing on their prized buy of Annabel Sutherland at the WPL 2024 Auction. The Australian star batter was bought by Delhi Capitals for an eye-staggering price of 2 crores. Sutherland eventually became the joint highest-price player with Kashvee Gautam at the end of the WPL 2024 Auction. DC’s Director of Cricket, Sourav Ganguly asserted that the staff wanted the club to buy the player.
Delhi Capitals had their priorities set. They needed a star batter and they broke the bank for the star batter. Sutherland who was signed by Gujarat Titans last year for 70 lakhs was later released. This year she had a base price of 40 lakhs, but after an intense bidding war between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians, the Delhi outfits got their player.
Speaking about the exciting additions to the squad, Delhi Capitals’ Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly, said, “The staff wanted Sutherland, Aparna and Ashwani, that’s what we discussed at the auction, and we got them. The squad has been good since last year, so it’s an addition. Hopefully, we play well as we did last year.”
Ganguly further added, “We are a good side and it’s the continuity of players who have performed well. Our Indian players are really good, and some of them who were part of us last year have now gone up a step higher to be in the national team, so that’s also an additional advantage.”
“DC were pretty much done with the auction after spending Rs 2 crore on Sutherland. The plans of both Mumbai Indians and Capitals were pretty clear. They were focusing on strengthening their teams. Overall, it’s a great pick for Delhi Capitals. They are trusting their younger Indian spinners because I immediately feel that Jess Jonassen could make way for Annabel Sutherland,” Abhinav Mukund, WPL Expert told JioCinema.
