SriLanka T20 WC Squad: ICC T20 World Cup 2022 – SriLanka have been hit with a major injury crisis and have called up three players to Australia to serve as cover. Wicket-keeper Niroshan Dickwella and Fast bowlers Matheesa Pathirana and Asitha Fernando have made the trip Down Under. The trio will travel with the squad and train with the team, but can only be drafted in should an injury replacement be ratified by the ICC technical committee. SriLanka’s injury crisis has mounted further with Binura Fernando now ruled out of the T20 World Cup after suffering an injury in the last game. The Lankans have already lost Dusmantha Chameera and Dilshan Madhushanka due to injury, while Danushka Gunathilaka was also ruled out. Binura was initially drafted in as an injury replacement but saw his tournament cut short.

With Pathum Nissanka also missing a game due to a groin injury, the SLC on Wednesday confirmed that three players will travel to Australia as cover, Niroshan Dickwella will serve as backup keeper and opener having not played a T20 in over a year. Pacers Matheesa Pathirana and Asitha Fernando add depth to the unit.
The former has a Lasith Malinga-type action and has IPL experience under his belt, having played for the Chennai Super Kings. Fernando took just two wickets in the three T20s that he played for Sri Lanka during the Asia Cup but he failed to make it to the World Cup squad.
“Obviously we’re having a bit of bad luck around injuries at the moment, especially, as you said, in the pace stock. We’ll obviously assess him (Fernando). The physio is working with him now and the doctor, so we’ll find out exactly the extent of injury to start with and we’ll have to make some decisions from there… Yes, (it’s his) his hamstring,” said Silverwood.
