In the latest development, both Sri Lankan Cricket Board and the Ministry of Sports, and virtually naming the new selectors. The Sri Lankan Cricket Board has also submitted the names of the new selectors. The national cricket board wants a fresh term for former pacer Pramodaya Wickramasinghe. It was under Wickramasinghe’s term the national cricket team defied all odds and lifted the 2022 Asia Cup.
The Sports ministry on the other side wants Pramodaya Wickramasinghe out of the Sri Lankan Cricket Board.
What are the Sports Ministry demands?
- SLC decided to retain Danushka Gunatilleke who was injured during the 2022 T20 World Cup, much to the displeasure of the sports ministry.

What is the selection procedure?
The SLC has always advertised the position, and among the applicants, ten names are hand-selected and given to the Sports Ministry. The Sports Ministry then selects five of the ten names and identifies them as selectors. Now, the procedures will change. The board will no longer have a say in selections, and the selectors are now answerable to the Ministry of Sports. However, the selectors’ salaries will be paid by the SLC.
Getting a national selector on board is never easy. After the fiasco with former Sri Lankan captains Arjuna Ranatunga, Aravinda de Silva, and Marvan Attapattu, former cricketers are unlikely to apply for the post. The SLC Board is on course for a collision with the Sports Ministry, which is never a healthy scenario. One just hopes that the matters get resolved and don’t impact the on-field performances of one of Asia’s most prominent cricket nations.
