Sri Lanka will play their opening match of the T20 World Cup 2024 against South Africa at the Citi Field in New York City.

Former Pakistani fast bowler Aaqib Javed has been appointed as Sri Lanka’s fast-bowling coach. He will begin his duties immediately and continue until the T20 World Cup 2024 concludes in June, which will be held in the West Indies and USA. Javed is scheduled to depart for Sri Lanka next week.

In a statement, Sri Lanka Cricket announced the appointment of Aaqib Javed, emphasizing his role as the national team’s fast-bowling coach. His tenure will extend until the conclusion of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the appointment of former Pakistan pace bowler Aaqib Javed as the national team’s fast-bowling coach,” the SLC statement said. “He will work with the national team until the completion of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.”

Aged 51, Javed has been the head coach of Lahore Qalandars in the PSL since 2017. Under his guidance, the team secured consecutive titles in 2022 and 2023. However, their performance this year was disappointing, managing only one victory and finishing at the bottom of the table.

Javed has previously served as Pakistan’s bowling coach, notably contributing to their triumph in the T20 World Cup in 2009. He also held the position of head coach for the UAE, during which they attained ODI status and qualified for the 2015 World Cup. Additionally, he led Pakistan’s Under-19 team to victory in 2004.

During his playing career, Javed represented Pakistan in 163 ODIs and 22 Test matches between 1988 and 1998. He was part of the squad that clinched the 1992 World Cup.
