As a result of their resignation, the Cricket Advisory Committee for Sri Lanka Cricket will become defunct. Apart from Sangakkara & Jayawardene, Aravind de Silva is also a member of the CAC as per a report in Daily News Sri Lanka.
The two former Sri Lanka cricket team captains criticised the government’s response to wide-spread protests amid the worst economic crisis.
The National Sports Council, which advised the government on sports policies, was headed by Mahela Jayawardene. The reports confirmed that he had tendered his resignation after a virtual meeting on April 4. Sports Director General Amal Edirisooriya confirmed the reports on Thursday.

Sri Lanka economic crisis LIVE: Both Jayawardene and Sangakkara are in coaching roles in IPL 2022. Jayawardene is the head coach of five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians while Sangakkara is the director of sports of Rajasthan Royals.
Following their resignation from the NSC, all 14 members of the council have tendered their resignation. Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa established the committee in August 2020 to advise the ministry.
Earlier, Sangakkara and Jayawardene heavily criticised the government’s handling of the crisis. The government detained thousands of protesters and imposed curfew and a state of emergency besides blocking social media sites.
“No amount of social media bans, curfews or declaring emergencies will solve the real emergency that is the suffering of the people and the economic crisis. The whole country including the majority that voted the government in is asking for a real solution. Where is it?” Kumar Sangakkara wrote in a response to a Sri Lankan journalist.

Mahela Jayawardene, Mumbai Indians’ head coach, too voiced his opinion against the Sri Lankan government for trying to suffocate people’s voice through curfews and detentions.
