Brydon Carse is set to miss England’s must-win ICC Champions Trophy encounter against Afghanistan on Wednesday. England had a poor outing with the ball, failing to defend their 351-run score against arch-nemesis Australia. However, Carse’s injury has raised concerns over his availability for the remainder of the Champions Trophy. Notably, it might be a worry to the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), who bought Carse for Rs 1.00 crore. SRH would also be having a look at their Rs 23 crore retention Heinrich Klaasen, who also missed South Africa’s opening game against Afghanistan.
Brydon Carse out of ICC Champions Trophy?
Brydon Carse had previously sat out England’s final two ODIs against India due to a blister on his left toe that required stitches. Though he returned for the defeat against Australia, he struggled in the opening match of the tournament, conceding 69 runs in seven overs. With the issue resurfacing, Carse was absent from training on Monday, making his participation in Lahore highly unlikely.
His absence comes at a critical juncture for England, who must win to keep their semi-final hopes alive. Ben Duckett’s phenomenal 165 was put down with a historic run-chase by Australia. Josh Inglis hammered a ton of his own and made sure Australia start their campaign by rattling rivals England. If Carse is unable to recover in time, England may be forced to consider a squad replacement, subject to ICC approval. Rehan Ahmed, who traveled with England’s white-ball squad in India, is a strong candidate to step in, providing an additional leg-spin option alongside Adil Rashid.
