“Spinners are bowling like fast bowlers”: Ex-CSK star laments lack of intent of taking wickets

Harbhajan Singh reckoned that spinners were not attacking in nature in IPL or in T20s and advised them to be more brave

Former Chennai Super Kings star Harbhajan Singh urged spinners to be more brave in IPL 2025. His remarks come ahead of the opening game of IPL 2025 between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 22. Harbhajan opined that the spinners in IPL and T20s lacked the intent for taking wickets and were rather bowling like fast bowlers.

All eyes will be on the trio of Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy and Krunal Pandya in the clash between KKR and RCB. While the defending champions will play in a familiar territory, RCB have a lack of options when it comes to wicket-taking spinners.

I am sorry to say in T20s or IPL, a lot of spinners are bowling like fast bowlers. They are not spinning the ball. They are not attacking and don’t have the intent of taking wickets. Spinners need to be a little more brave, take chances. They need to spin the ball, look to flight it, take chances and be in the match,” Harbhajan Singh said in a virtual media round table (via India Today).

Harbhajan also welcomed the move to lift the ban on bowlers using saliva. He said that the usage allowed pacers to get swing and spinners to get drift. The ex-CSK star hoped that the ban will be lifted in international cricket as well soon.

It is good that bowlers can use saliva again, it’s a good thing for bowlers. Soon we will see it in international cricket because it is easy to shine the ball with saliva. It brings swing for pacers and drift for spinners,” the former off-spinner added.
