South Africa coach to keep a close watch on World Cup hopefuls Nortje & Coetzee during IPL

IPL 2024L Anrich Nortje and Gerald Coetzee are returning from major injuries, and could be important for South Africa's chances in T20 World Cup.

South African fast bowlers Anrich Nortje and Gerald Coetzee will both be under the close scrutiny of their white-ball coach Rob Walter, at this year’s IPL 2024. Just a few days after the culmination of the tournament, the T20 World Cup will get underway, and as per a report in ESPNCrinfo, the duo are on the radar for the tournament, for sure.

Both are coming back from injuries, and that’s why a close watch for the two is also needed. Meanwhile, apart from Nortje and Coetzee, six other South African pacers are there too in the IPL – Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Andile Phehlukwayo, Ottniel Baartman and Lizaad Williams. Lungi Ngidi was also part of the tournament, but now has been ruled out due to a back injury.

Nortje had missed the ODI World Cup 2023 due to an injury, after he suffered a stress fracture in his back. Finally, he made his comeback at the CSA’s T20 domestic tournament, and will play another game, before leaving for the IPL. Coetzee, on the other hand, last played in a Test match against India in December last year. He is already in India, and in the Mumbai Indians camp, but won’t play for the team in the first few matches.

Having said that, those are not the only players, who would be under the watchful eyes of Walter. With the CSA T20 tournament going on, he would also be keeping an eye on Ryan Rickelton, Reeza Hendricks, Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi, and Bjorn Fortuin. South Africa will then play a T20I series against the West Indies, after which, they will announce their squad for the T20 World Cup.
