Sourav Ganguly wants Virat Kohli to open for India, backs Rohit Sharma to fire in T20 World Cup

The former Indian skipper's remarks on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma come ahead of the highly-anticipated T20 World Cup 2024

Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly has backed India cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma to perform well in the upcoming T20 World Cup. The DC mentor’s remarks come amid concerns over the Hitman’s poor form in IPL 2024, leading up to the marquee event.

Ganguly further expressed his desire to see Virat Kohli open the batting for India in the tournament that will be co-hosted by the USA and the Caribbean islands.

No concerns over Rohit Sharma: Ganguly

Speaking at the book launch of Pravin Amre, Ganguly opined that Rohit Sharma has a history of faring well in big tournaments. He reckoned that the Hitman will be fine when it comes to playing at a big stage, adding that India comprised of a strong side. Opening the innings for MI in IPL 2024, Rohit has managed to score only 349 runs from 13 games at a strike rate of 145.41.

India is a very good team. Rohit will play well in the World Cup. He plays well in big tournaments. At the big stage he will be fine,” Ganguly said.

Virat Kohli as India’s opener?

Ganguly further echoes the sentiments of many that has been doing the rounds over who should open the batting for India. Virat Kohli‘s stellar form in IPL 2024 has prompted Ganguly to back him to start off the innings for India at the T20 World Cup. The run-maestro is currently the leading run-getter in IPL 2024, with 661 runs at an average of 66.10.

I think Virat Kohli should open for India in T20 World Cup,” he added.
