Sourav Ganguly, Ricky Ponting back Rishabh Pant to be part of Team India squad for T20 World Cup

Sourav Ganguly and Ricky Pointing asserted that there is no reason for Rishabh Pant to not be in Team India squad for T20 World Cup

Just 2 weeks remain for the start of ICC T20 World Cup. The BCCI is yet to announce Team India squad for World Cup, but Rishabh Pant is likely for a National Team return. Both Sourav Ganguly and Ricky Ponting belives, that Rishabh Pant can make it to Team India squad for the ICC T20 World Cup.

Since his near fatal accident, Rishabh Pant made a comeback to the game in IPL 2024. And now the BCCI medical team too has given him the clearance to play in the World Cup. But the apex body is still cautious about the southpaw given the huge extent of injury that he suffered.

Albeit a bit rusty in the beginning, Rishabh Pant roared back to form with consecutive fifties. Rishabh Pant has amassed 254 runs in 8 games with 2 half centuries to his name. He is back with his old swagger of hitting the ball out of the park and has been equally good behind the stumps.

Ganguly, Ponting back Rishabh Pant

Both Sourav Ganguly and Ricky Ponting has backed Rishabh Pant. The duo are confident that Rishabh will make it to Team India squad for the T20 World Cup. Ganguly claimed that Rishabh Pant’s ideal batting position should be in the middle order. That is where he is most versatile and also gives India a chance to pile up some big scores.

“I think so, yeah, I think yes (on Pant’s chance of making it to T20 World Cup). Only 15 can make it, but as in any sport it happens, the most equipped and the better ones play and I think Pant is definitely in that bracket, I’m sure he’ll be going to West Indies,” Sourav Ganguly said.

“He should bat in the middle order. Where exactly is very difficult to say in T20 cricket, because of [factors like] match-ups, right-left combinations depending on who bowls, the situation of the game. It’s probably not possible for anyone – right from no. 3 to 7 – to say with surety what their fixed position is. It doesn’t work like that in T20 cricket especially,” Ganguly added.

Australian legend Ricky Ponting has backed Pant. He has claimed that Pant will surely be in Team India squad. Ponting reasoned that Rishabh Pant is too good a player to left out of the squad.

“I’ve been asked a lot already the last couple of weeks now that he’s back playing what cold be his World Cup chances. I think he’ll be in the squad for sure. He’s too good a player and can have too much of an impact on games for India to not pick him,” Ponting concluded.
