Former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has called for the inclusion of Yashasvi Jaiswal in India’s squad for the ICC World Cup 2023, scheduled to be played at home in October-November. Jaiswal took the center stage in IND vs WI 1st Test with a stunning 171 on debut and Ganguly feels the youngster has ‘quality to serve Indian cricket for long’.

“I would like to see Jaiswal play in the upcoming ODI World Cup. I have watched him closely during the IPL. While red-ball cricket demands a different set of skills, Jaiswal has shown that he possesses the qualities to excel in all formats. I believe he has the potential to serve Indian cricket for a long time,” Ganguly stated in an interview with Times of India.
The 22-year-old came into Test setup after a domestic season, and his IPL 2023 stint for an undisclosed team was nothing short of stellar. He amassed a staggering 625 runs, with one century and five half-centuries to his name, including the fastest-ever half-century in IPL history.
His debut innings against the West Indies in Dominica, left a lasting impression on Sourav Ganguly, who spoke highly of Jaiswal’s potential.
Ganguly emphasised the significance of having a left-hand-right-hand combination at the top order in limited-overs cricket. This tactical advantage poses challenges for rival bowlers as they need to continuously adapt their line and length accordingly.
“Having a left-hander like Jaiswal at the top, complementing a right-hander, can create trouble for the opposition’s bowlers. The variety in the batting order can give India a competitive edge during crucial phases of the game,” Ganguly added.

BCCI should withdraw Jaiswal from Asian Games squad: Ganguly
Notably, Jaiswal’s selection for the Asian Games squad has raised some concerns regarding his potential inclusion in the World Cup squad. Since both events have overlapping schedules, Ganguly advised the selectors to prioritise Jaiswal for the ICC World Cup instead.
“Considering the significance of the ICC World Cup, it would be better for the selectors to withdraw Jaiswal from the Asian Games squad and give him the opportunity to contribute to India’s World Cup campaign”, Ganguly said.
Asian Games will kick off from 19 September and conclude on 8 October 2023, while the ODI World Cup will begin on October 5.
