Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has had some incredible experiences as a cricketer. Ponting has led Australia to ODI World Cup triumph in 2003, scored tons of runs throughout his career, but has he ever intimidated anyone in Australian cricket? That was the question Ponting had to face while talking at a podcast. The former Aussie batter, much like his personality, came out swinging.
During a podcast with ‘The Grade Cricketer’, the host asked Ponting, “Do you think people in Australian Cricket are frightened of you?”
Ponting, looking dapper in a black suit, laughed at the question and said, “I hope not,” before adding “There might have been some when I was playing.”
Ricky Ponting then went on to elaborate further. He claimed there were some younger players during the fag end of his career who had walked away from Sheffield Shield games because they were intimidated by him.
“There might have been a few younger Shield players at the back end of my career that might have walked away from a shield game being a bit frightened,” Ricky Ponting said laughingly.
The hosts of the podcast were not ready to leave the topic. They pressed the former Aussie captain to reveal the players’ identity.
However, Ponting, without naming anyone, said he knew who those players were. “A couple of them are still playing. I know who they are,” Ponting said.
Ponting has had a stellar career with Australia. He scored more than 13,000 runs in both Tests and One Day Internationals. Ponting maintained an average of over 51 in Tests and over 42 in ODIs. Ponting also led Australia to 26 consecutive undefeated 50-over World Cup games, stepping down from the captaincy when that run ended.
