Mandhana mentioned how her family was pressuring her to choose tennis over cricket in light of Sania Mirza’s glitzy success. Mandhana, addressing Sania, said, “Somewhere I think you were the torchbearer (for women athletes), growing up I remember there being a trend of everyone wanted to be Sania Mirza.” Smriti further spoke about her mother pushing her to pursue a career in women’s tennis.
“I remember my mom telling me why don’t take up tennis, I was 9 or 10 as there so much scope in women’s tennis.” The Indian star batter then said that her love of cricket was too great and that this prevented her from making the shift. Mirza responded by playfully saying, “Thank God!”

Later in the interview, Sania Mirza also questioned Mandhana about playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, a team that features one of cricket’s all-time greats, Virat Kohli, who wears number 18. Mandhana responded to this query by joking that RCB chose to make a bid for her in the auction based on the fact that she had had this number for more than ten years.
RCB will open their WPL campaign with a clash against Delhi Capitals on Sunday. Mandhana will be leading the RCB Women whereas Meg Lanning who led Australia to glory in the recent ICC Women’s T20 World Cup will take charge of the DC.
