In a recent episode of his talk show, Ash ki Baat, Indian cricket veteran Ravichandran Ashwin gave his full backing to the rising star Priyansh Arya, predicting a significant breakthrough for the 23-year-old in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Auction.
Ashwin expressed both surprise and conviction as he reflected on how Priyansh Arya went unsold in the previous IPL 2024 auction but remained confident that the left-handed opener is destined for greater things.
Remarkable Rise in Domestic Cricket of Priyansh Arya
Ravichandran Ashwin’s admiration for Priyansh Arya stems from the youngster’s standout performance in domestic cricket, particularly in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Delhi Premier League (DPL). Arya’s batting prowess came to the fore when he smashed a stunning six off India’s star all-rounder Washington Sundar on a turning track in Syed Mushtaq Ali.
“Last year I saw Priyansh Arya in Syed Mushtaq Ali. He was playing on a slow and a turner wicket. And he just by standing on the back foot, smashed Washington Sundar for a six over the cover. And that time (in 2023) I said that someone will pick him at the IPL 2024 Auction. Before the IPL 2024 Auction, I also did a preview show and I remarked that someone could take Priyansh Arya in auction but surprisingly no one took him,” Ashwin recalled.
Delhi Premier League: Priyansh Arya show
Priyansh Arya, a key player for the South Delhi Superstarz in the inaugural edition of the Delhi Premier League, took the competition by storm. Scoring 608 runs in just ten innings, Arya emerged as the top run-scorer of the tournament. His unbeaten 107* against Purani Dilli and explosive 120 off 50 balls versus North Delhi showcased his ability to dominate at the top of the order.
His knack for big hits was further highlighted when he struck six sixes in an over, solidifying his reputation as a power hitter.
IPL 2025 Auction: Golden Opportunity
Despite his spectacular domestic run, Arya went unsold in the IPL 2024 Auction, a surprise for many, including Ashwin. The spinner remarked, “I genuinely thought someone would pick him last year.”
Arya’s consistent show in List A and T20 formats, including standout performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, were crucial for Delhi. With an impressive strike rate of 155 in T20s and his explosive style of play, he is a top-order batter ready to make waves in the IPL 2025.
