The incident took place in the final over the powerplay, i.e., the sixth over. Bangladesh opener Liton Das came down the track, moving leg-side in an attempt to go over mid-off against Lahiru Kumara’s full-length delivery. However, Das didn’t get the desired elevation and was caught inside the circle by Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka.

Lahiru Kumara, who provided the breakthrough said a word or two for Liton Das which the batsman clearly didn’t like it and he responded back. The scenes got even uglier when M Naim and other Sri Lankan players joined him and started getting physical. The scenes eventually got worse and umpires and other players has to separate Kumara and Das.

Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh Rivalry – Nidahas Trophy: This is not the first time Sri Lanka and Bangladesh players are involved in ugly scenes. The biggest drama came to light in 2018 during the Nidahas trophy. The drama started when Sri Lanka’s Upul Tharanga and Isuru Udana got physical with Bangladesh’s reserve players.

In another incident that took place in the virtual semi-final after the end of the second ball of the final over when Mustafizur Rahman was run-out. With the first two balls being bouncers, Bangladesh felt that the second ball should have been a no-ball but the umpires did not signal it. Some Bangladesh substitute players were seen engaging in verbal fights with Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis before Bangladesh came up with the famous ‘Nagin Dance’ after knocking Sri Lanka out of the finals.

Sri Lanka skipper Tamim later dismissed the controversy –

“Very emotional finish, we saw the leg umpire signal a no-ball, we were complaining about the no-ball. We could have done it nicely. We won’t create anything bad about this incident. I did a good job, but if I could have continued a but longer, but we won so all forgotten,” Tamim said after the match.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan also apologized about the incident –

“You can’t expect more than that in a T20 game, so much excitement, emotion. Credit goes to SL, losing five early wickets. We kept our nerves in the end. I knew I was not 100% as far as batting is concerned. We always had healthy competition on the ground, but outside, we are friends. Emotions take over, I need to be careful as a leader of a team, I will be careful next time,” Shakib said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
