SL beat BAN Highlights: Chasing 184 to win, Sri Lanka got off to a blazing start with Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis taking the attack to the Bangladesh bowlers. After an initial bedding-in period the duo went hard in the powerplay, managing 44 in the first five overs. However, the game soon turned with debutant Ebadot Hossain picking up both Nissanka and Charith Asalanka in the same over.

Kusal Mendis received a huge reprieve after he was given out LBW off a no-ball. The left-hander made the most of the opportunity, punishing the pacers and spinners alike even as wickets well on the other end. It was not until the 10th over that Mendis found an able partner in captain Shanaka as the duo took the game deep.

However, Ebadot and Taskin Ahmed managed to claw Bangladesh back into the contest with some outstanding fielding and good bowling. Sri Lanka were down and out after the dismissal of Shanaka with 25 needed off the final two overs with only three wickets in hand.

Fortunately for the ‘hosts’, Chamika Karunaratne and Asitha Fernando swung their bats as Bangladesh succumbed to the pressure, with Hossain and Mahedi Hasan both overstepping at crucial junctures to hand Sri Lanka the win.

Earlier, Sri Lanka had won the toss and put Bangladesh into bat in their knockout clash. While Shabbir Rahman perished early, Mehidy Hasan Miraz got them off to a flyer, with Bangladesh scoring 50 of their first six overs. Wanindu Hasaranga and Chamika Karunaratne then wrestled back control in the middle overs with Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan and Miraz falling in quick succession.

Afif Hossain and Mahmudullah then took the attack to the Lankans with the former in particularly fine touch, scoring at a strike rate in excess of 170. The duo chipped in with a 57-run stand in no time as Bangladesh upped the ante to take their score past 150. Mossadek Hossain and Taskin Ahmed then added some finishing touches to the innings as they put on a mammoth 183 in their 20 overs. Hossain after his crunch 48 in the first game, managed 24 off just 9 balls on Thursday.

Eventually, Bangladesh did well fall short and crashed out in the group stages of the Asia Cup. It is a rather shameful exit for Shakib and CO, who were knocked out of the T20 world Cup last year without a single win.
