Earlier, Afghanistan won the toss and opted to bowl first. Sri Lanka were off to a terrible start with Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka departing in the first over of Fazalhaq Farooqi bagging both. Then Sri Lanka lost Pathum Nissanka rather controversially. While he referred the umpire’s decision, the TV umpire gave it OUT although there was no clear spike on the Ultra-edge.

With Sri Lanka down 5/3, Danushka Gunathilaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa began the rescue act. They added 44 runs to delay the inevitable for some time. However, Mujeeb Ur Rahman removed Gunathilaka and soon Wanindu Hasaranga also departed. Then, there was a harakiri with Rajapaksa and Theekshana run-out in two successive balls.
In the end, Rajapaksa’s 29-ball 38 was the highest while Karunaratne scored 38-ball 31 to help Sri Lanka avoid their lowest total.
