T20 World Cup Semifinals Race: India, Australia still alive in semis…

SL beat WI Highlights: Shimron Hetmyer’s 80 in vain as Sri Lanka knock out West Indies with 20-run victory

SL beat WI Highlights – West Indies crash out: West Indies captain Kieron Pollard won the toss and opted to bowl first against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi. He must be ruing that decision as it was the same pitch where India scored 210 last night. Sri Lanka made sure it was a mistake with Pethum Nissanka and Charith Asalanka scoring half-centuries to set a 190-run target in a must-win match for the Windies.

Sri Lanka got off to a great start with Kusal Perera taking on West Indies bowling attack. While he departed in the powerplay, Pethum Nissanka and Charith Asalanka shouldered on the responsibility in their last game having been knocked out. Taking advantage of the surface Nissanka hammered 51 off 41 while Asalanka smashed 68 off 41. The duo’s 91-run partnership put Sri Lanka in command. In the end, Dasun Shanaka’s quickfire 25 off 14 helped Sri Lanka post 189/3.

In response, West Indies struggled. The old guns had a bad day once again. Chris Gayle departed for 1 and Evin Lewis followed him back. While Nicholas Pooran kept the scorecard ticking with a 46-run knock, they lost Roston Chase. Soon, Pooran too departed after a 30-run stand with Hetmyer.

SL beat WI Highlights: The youngster continued but Windies kept on losing wickets at the other end. Kieron Pollard (0), Andre Russell (2), Jason Holder (8), and DJ Bravo (2) all failed to make an impact and despite Hetmyer’s late charge, it wasn’t enough as West Indies finished on 169/8, falling short by 20 runs.

West Indies play Australia next but even a win will not matter for them. Windies have 2 points from four matches while Sri Lanka finished with four points from five. However, for Australia, the West Indies match on Saturday will be a quarterfinal as winning the match will keep them in the running for semifinals. If they lose and South Africa win, Australia will crash out.
