Shubman Gill isn’t doing him a favor in the IPL 2024. The Gujarat Titans skipper is having a hit-and-miss season so far. If that wasn’t bad enough, his competitors for the top-order spot in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad have been doing much better than him.
No place for Shubman Gill in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad?
In the 10 matches he’s played, he has scored 320 runs and isn’t even his team’s highest run-scorer. His strike rate of 140.96 is a bit of a concern as well. While it’s not bad by any means, all of his competitors (Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson) are scoring at a faster rate than him, and most are averaging better while doing so as well.
He’s gone past the 30-run mark five times in his 10 innings but only scored a half-century twice. The five other times, he’s scored just 55 runs. As an opener and the best batter of his side, much more is expected of him. By the high standards Shubman Gill has set for himself, he’s underperforming.

IPL 2024 performance: Gill vs other contenders
All four of the other contenders for the Top 3 positions have scored at a better strike rate than Shubman Gill, and it’s only Jaiswal who’s currently averaging less than him. Someone like Samson might also have a better chance than him because he’s led his side to the top of the IPL 2024 points table and keeps wickets as well. Rohit and Kohli are basically penciled in, and Jaiswal has already been preferred over him for India in T20I cricket in the past.
