Former India cricket team fielding coach R Sridhar has backed Shubman Gill to be the next India captain for all three formats of the game. At present, Gill is the vice-captain for T20Is and ODIs, serving as deputy to Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma. Sridhar predicts Gill to be the one to take over the reins from Rohit and lead India in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
‘Gill an all-format leader’
The former Indian fielding coach heaped praise of Gill and Jaiswal for acing their roles in all three formats of the game. He backed Gill to lead India in the future in T20Is, ODIs and Tests, backing him as Rohit Sharma’s successor.
“Shubman Gill for me is an all-format player and I think he would be the apprentice to captain Rohit Sharma in Test matches and ODIs. I am sure India will see him as the captain post 2027 World Cup in all formats,” told Hindustan Times.
After warming the bench in the T20 World Cup, Gill announced his comeback in style by leading India to a 4-1 win in the series against Zimbabwe.
Despite being of just 24 years of age, Shubman Gill is not new to captain. After Hardik Pandya‘s trade off to Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2024, Gill was promoted as the skipper of his side Gujarat Titans. Albeit the team didn’t perform well, the seeds of leadership were planted then.
