India’s star opener, Shubman Gill, opened up on the ‘pitch switch‘ by the BCCI in World Cup the semi-final against New Zealand at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. The kind-of last-minute change in the designated pitch raised questions, with the ICC later asserting that no rules were infringed.
When asked about the same at post-match press conference, Shubman Gill responded to the situation with a touch of humor. Watch the video below.
When questioned by a reporter about the potential controversy surrounding the pitch before the match, Gill replied with a laugh, “I just got to know there was a controversy on the pitch. What was the controversy.“
Initially, pitch number seven was designated for crucial matches based on ICC consultant Andy Atkinson’s assessment. However, the pitch selection changed at the last minute, and the newly chosen pitch (number six) had already been used twice in the tournament for England-South Africa and India-Sri Lanka matches.
The sudden change in the pitch led to speculation and raised questions about the BCCI’s involvement. However, the Board clarified that all pitches were being prepared under the supervision of the ICC’s governing body. There is no specific rule mandating the use of new surfaces for knockout matches.
