Shubman Gill’s love story with the Narendra Modi Stadium continues. The Gujarat Titans (GT) captain has done well in Ahmedabad, not just in the Indian Premier League (IPL) but otherwise as well. His only T20I hundred came at the venue, and he has Test and ODI hundreds there as well.
But nothing comes close to his IPL record in Ahmedabad. Gill doesn’t even average 40 in the league, but at his home venue, that goes up to 60. His career strike rate goes from 136 to 160. Three of his four hundreds have come here as well. One mustn’t forget his 129 in the IPL 2023 Qualifier 2 also came in Ahmedabad.
His record has continued to get better and better. Although Gill fell for 38 (27) against the Mumbai Indians in match nine of the IPL 2025 season, this was enough for him to break David Warner’s record and become the second-fastest batter to score 1000 runs at an IPL venue.
Fastest players to reach 1000 runs at a venue in IPL
Player | Venue | Innings |
---|---|---|
Chris Gayle | Bengaluru | 19 |
Shubman Gill | Ahmedabad | 20 |
David Warner | Hyderabad | 22 |
Shaun Marsh | Mohali | 26 |
Suryakumar Yadav | Mumbai | 31 |
While it wasn’t Gill’s best innings, on a tough pitch, he did well. Along with opening partner Sai Sudharsan, the GT captain stitched a valuable 78-run stand. Seeing Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma go, some may think that Gill didn’t play well.
But as GT batting coach Parthiv Patel explained, they have rolled out a black soil pitch, which assists the spinners more. The move is deliberate since MI plays on a red soil surface at the Wankhede Stadium. Keeping this in mind, Gill has played a good knock.
