Shubman Gill gets golden chance to cement leadership position in future, can he capitalise?

Shubman Gill, who was named India vice-captain for both ODIs and T20Is vs Sri Lanka, now has the golden chance to bag the role for Tests as well

India cricket team batter Shubman Gill is in a prime position to take over the reins as skipper in all three-formats of the game. Clearly, from BCCI’s decision to make him vice-captain in both T20Is and ODIs in IND vs SL is a sign of the board willing to groom the youngster as the next skipper. With only a couple of years left for Rohit Sharma, Gill is one of the apt choices as vice-captain and captain and has the backing of the selectors.

How Shubman Gill can go on to be an all-format skipper for India

Shubman Gill will kick start his preparations for India’s upcoming tours with the Duleep Trophy. The Punjab batter will lead Team A in the tournament and play alongside a pool of talented individuals including KL Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav. Gill’s selection in the XI for India’s Tests against Bangladesh is for sure, given his form in the longest format of the game and his form.

While he has already been named deputy to Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma in T20Is and ODIs respectively, it remains to be seen if he will be handed a similar role for the third format. Judging by the current situation, Rohit is expected to continue as the Test skipper for at least two more years. This gives enough time for Gill to be groomed as a seasoned leader as well.

Shubman Gill captaincy record in T20Is

Latest news

Earlier in July, a report by Mint claimed that Shubman Gill is all set to replace Jasprit Bumrah as the side’s vice-captain. Rightfully so, the batter has been a regular in India’s Test XI, given that Hardik Pandya is no longer in the picture and Bumrah is often rested for non-important tours as a part of his workload management. Gill is an apt contender for the position simply because he is young and has had a decent track record as a captain which includes his stint for Gujarat Titans in the IPL.
