Shubman Gill’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season has finally started to pickup. The Gujarat Titans (GT) captain has finally converted his start and has hit his maiden IPL 2025 fifty in a crucial game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Hyderabad on April 6, Sunday.
IPL 2025: Gill hammers SRH
Chasing a tricky total of 153 on a two-paced deck, Gill came up with a much-needed rearguard action, especially when his side lost early wickets. Sai Sudharsan, who was hammering runs consistently was gone early before Jos Buttler joined him in the pavilion. Then, Washington Sundar and Gill got together to stitch a match-winning partnership of 90 runs off 56 balls. While Sundar was left one run short of his fifty, Gill managed to make his third fifty as GT captain as the Titans went closer to their third win of the IPL 2025 season.
It was a proper captain’s knock by Gill, who remained imperturbed en route to his entire stay. Mohammed Shami was taken to cleaners in the powerplay before Gill handled the legspin of Zeeshan Ansari skillfully. Meanwhile, Sherfane Rutherford finsihed the formalities of the run-chase with a superb cameo of 35 off 16 balls.
Gill’s first T20 fifty in 267 days
Despite being one of the best all-format players, Gill has taken 267 days to hit a T20 fifty. While the opening spots were kept for Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma in recent times for the Indian T20I team, Gill’s last fifty came against Zimbabwe.
It was during a five-match T20I series right after the T20 World Cup 2024. He was the captain in that rubber, smashing twin fifties in third and fourth T20Is.
Gill finished the run-chase with an unbeaten score of 61 off 43*, an innings that was laced with nine beautiful boundaries. Now, GT would hope that Gill takes his new-found form to another level. It would be quite crucial for a side, sitting second on the points table with three wins in four games.
