Just a day after the conclusion of the ICC World Cup 2023, the Indian Cricket Team announced their squad for the upcoming India vs Australia T20 series. As expected earlier, the stalwarts and the veterans of the team were given a much-needed break while Suryakumar Yadav has been tasked to lead the Men in Blue. On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer is set to join the squad as the vice-captain in the last two matches of the series.
Yet again Shreyas Iyer is now in the spotlight for the captaincy role. While he is not leading the side, he will be deputy for SKY who will be leading the Men in Blue from the front.
World Number 1 batter Suryakumar Yadav will lead a young Indian brigade against the newly crowned World Champions. SKY is set to lead the side in the absence of T20 skipper Hardik Pandya. But Shreyas Iyer who is a dependable middle-order batter for the Men in Blue has been given a 3-match break after the World Cup.
Shreyas Iyer has consolidated his position in the Indian team at the Number 4 position with a string of gritty and dependable innings both in the Asia Cup and in the World Cup. Moreover, with India lacking strength in getting a flexible Number 4 batter, Shreyas Iyer is the best fit in the mix.
With the World Cup just concluded, all the regular members of the team sans SKY and Ishan Kishan will feature in the series. Destructive opener Ruturaj Gaikwad who led a young brigade to clinch gold in the Asian Games will be vice-captain for the first three games. Shreyas Iyer being the second most senior member of the team will join the squad in the last two matches as the vice-captain of the team.
