Just a few days ago, under Rohit Sharma‘s captaincy, the men in blue clinched the T20 World Cup 2024 by beating South Africa in the finals at Barbados. We witnessed how the Indian cricket team received an unbelievable reception from Indian cricket fans. No one can forget how almost 300,000 people came to see their favorite heroes and followed their victory parade at Marine Drive, Mumbai.
From the victory parade to meeting with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the men in blue got everything they deserved. And the man of the moment who led the team from the front, Rohit Sharma, has become a favorite boy of India. But it is also true that this favorite boy had a tough outing just a month ago in IPL 2024. Hitman lost the captaincy, did not have a fair outing with the bat, and faced criticism from all quarters.
But since Rohit Sharma has clinched India’s thirst for an ICC trophy, can the Mumbai Indians call up their former skipper to lead the team once again?

Will Rohit Sharma lead MI in IPL 2025?
It’s no secret that the Mumbai Indians had their worst IPL 2024, losing 10 matches and winning just 4, finishing at the bottom of the table under Hardik Pandya. MI placed hope on the all-rounder, but he failed to replicate his victory dance from his time with the Gujarat Titans in 2022. Pandya had a wonderful outing with GT in 2022, winning the IPL championship, and in 2023, they were the runners-up. However, he clearly couldn’t repeat the same success with the Mumbai franchise in IPL 2024.
On the other hand, Rohit Sharma, who led the MI franchise to five trophies, also experienced a decline in captaincy, especially after their 2020 IPL win. In 2021, they finished 5th, in 2022, they were in 10th place, although 2023 saw improvement with a 3rd place finish, but IPL 2024 was a complete disaster.
Considering both captaincy scenarios in IPL, it’s not easy to pick one among them as captain of MI for IPL 2025. Although there are few reports stating that Hardik Pandya had a one-year contract with the Mumbai Indians, if this is true, we may see a leadership change next year. Also, it is not to be forgotten that there are reports stating Rohit might leave the Mumbai Indians, but there is no official report out yet.
Hardik Pandya also did an amazing job for the men in blue at the T20 World Cup 2024, both with the bat and ball, making things complicated for the Mumbai franchise.
