“Shocked” Jadeja spills beans on Ashwin’s retirement, wants better spinner cum all-rounder as replacement

Ravindra Jadeja revealed that he only knew about Ashwin's retirement in the last minute and admitted that he will miss bowling with his spin twin

India cricket team all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was shocked just like the rest of the world when Ravichandran Ashwin decided to announce his retirement. The Tamil Nadu spinner, who is one half of the spin twin along with Jadeja, decided to hang up his boots following IND vs AUS 3rd Test. The combination of Jadeja and Ashwin was a lethal one for India, with the duo sharing 587 wickets between themselves in the -58 matches they have played together.

When Jadeja was “shocked” by Ashwin’s sudden retirement

Speaking to reporters as the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) ahead of IND vs AUS 4th Test, Jadeja revealed that he only knew at the last moment that Ashwin was planning to retire. He revealed despite spending the entire day with the veteran and having a chat, no hint was dropped on his plans whatsoever.

“I got to know about the retirement at the last moment. Five minutes before the press conference. It was shocking, We spent the entire day together, and he didn’t even gave me the hint. We all know how Ashwin’s mind works,” Jadeja said.

Further, Jadeja admitted that he will miss partnering with Ashwin to plot the downfall of the opposition in the future. The southpaw fondly recalled that the duo complemented each other very well and used to plan extensively against the batters. Jadeja hoped for a better spin bowler and all-rounder to replace Ashwin in the squad.

We have been bowling partners for so many years. We kept complementing each other. We used to plan against the batters. I will miss so many things. Hopefully, someone better spin bowler and all-rounder will replace Ashwin,” Jadeja said.

Ashwin’s glorious career

A career that started in 2010, Ashwin saw many ups — along with winning the 2011 World Cup, 2013 Champions Trophy, and two-time finalist of the World Test Championships. It must be admitted that R Ashwin proved to be the most effective in Test matches, where he not only won numerous matches for India with ball, but with the bat as well.
