Shivam Mavi’s future at LSG and Indian Cricket Team? More than just speed

After being sidelined for nearly a year, Shivam Mavi recently made his comeback, playing his first match in ages for Kashi Rudras in the Uttar Pradesh T20 League.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) fast bowler Shivam Mavi, known for his relentless pace, is determined not to let injuries define his career. Despite a series of setbacks, the 25-year-old remains committed to maintaining the speed that has made him a standout talent in Indian cricket.

Battling Major Injuries: Shivam Mavi

Shivam Mavi’s journey has been marked by significant challenges. With four stress fractures in his back and a Grade II knee injury, his young career has been marred by serious setbacks. Reflecting on his injuries, Mavi humorously remarks to Indian Express, “I’ve stopped counting the minor ones.” Yet, despite these obstacles, he remains undeterred.

After being sidelined for nearly a year, Shivam Mavi recently made his comeback, playing his first match in ages for Kashi Rudras in the Uttar Pradesh T20 League. Although his figures—two overs for 31 runs—weren’t extraordinary, the significance of his return to competitive cricket was priceless. “I’m trying to get my rhythm back,” Mavi shares, adding that his ultimate goal is to play the entire domestic season without further interruptions.

Poignant Determination

Shivam Mavi’s resilience is driven by an unwavering belief in his potential. Quoting former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he says, “Mai haar nahi manunga (I will not give up).” For Mavi, giving up is not an option. His passion for fast bowling is the fuel that keeps him going, despite the many challenges he faces. “I don’t know anything else,” he admits, emphasising that his love for the game is what motivates him to overcome every fall.

Dream of Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti

Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti, who made headlines during the 2018 Under-19 World Cup with their raw pace, continue to share a common dream: bowling together for India. Although injuries have stalled their progress—Nagarkoti has been out of competitive cricket for nearly two years—the duo remains optimistic.

Shivam Mavi recently spent time with Nagarkoti at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, where they renewed their promise to each other. “The hunger is back,” Mavi says, expressing hope that both will soon represent India at the highest level.

Struggle for Rhythm

One of the biggest challenges for Mavi has been regaining his rhythm after each injury. “Rehab is repetitive, but the most frustrating part is not being able to find the rhythm straightaway,” he explains. The process of hitting the desired length and getting his run-up right is not instantaneous, and it requires patience and persistence.

However, Shivam Mavi is optimistic that with more matches under his belt, he will soon regain his peak form.

Refusing to compromise on pace

Despite his injuries, Mavi remains steadfast in his refusal to compromise on pace. Standing at 5 feet 8 inches, he consistently clocks 140 kph, a speed that has brought him recognition in the cricketing world. “Pace gave me the recognition,” he asserts, acknowledging that bowling at speeds below 140 kph would make it easier for batsmen. For Mavi, maintaining his pace is crucial, and he is determined to stick to it, even as he works to find his rhythm again.

Learning from the Best

Shivam Mavi finds solace and inspiration in conversations with fellow fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, both of whom have also battled career-threatening injuries. “You can’t control the injuries,” Mavi recalls their advice. He understands that fast bowling is a demanding job, and the risks of injury are part of the game. However, with the guidance of these seasoned players, Mavi is more prepared than ever to face the challenges ahead.

As he embarks on the next phase of his career, Shivam Mavi’s determination to stay true to his pace and his dreams is unwavering. His journey is a testament to the resilience and passion that defines the best in sport.
