Shivam Dube puts ‘pressure on’ Suryakumar, Rishabh for T20 WC selection; Agarkar to make ‘brave’ call

Shivam Dube's potential inclusion presents a dilemma for the selectors. While his recent batting form is undeniable, his limited bowling opportunities in the IPL might raise questions about his overall contribution to the team.

With the ICC T20 World Cup just around the corner, the race for a spot in India’s 15-member squad is heating up. Shivam Dube’s recent batting performances have put him in the spotlight, prompting calls from cricket legends for his inclusion in the World Cup team.

Shivam Dube Blazes Trail with CSK

Shivam Dube‘s blistering knock of 45 runs off just 24 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad on a sluggish pitch showcased his power-hitting prowess. This performance, along with his overall IPL 2024 record of 148 runs at a strike rate of over 160, has grabbed the attention of cricket pundits.

Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag Back Dube’s Selection

Cricket icons Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag have been vocal in their support for Shivam Dube. Yuvraj labelled Dube a “game-changer” and a must-have for the World Cup squad, while Sehwag believes Dube’s consistent show in the IPL has put pressure on established middle-order batter like Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant.

“I said before the match that the way Shivam Dube has been playing, his ticket should be confirmed for the T20 World Cup. He has put a lot of pressure on players like Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, KL Rahul and now they have to score consistent runs to make the World Cup squad. Take the players who are in-form,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

Shivam Dube Bowling and T20 World Cup Pitch

Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull highlighted the slow and spin-friendly nature of the Caribbean pitches, co-hosts for the T20 World Cup, suggesting these conditions would suit Dube’s batting style. However, Doull also pointed out the lack of bowling opportunities Shivam Dube has received with Chennai Super Kings with ball in hand, which could be a concern.

Michael Vaughan: Time for a “Brave Selection”

English cricket legend Michael Vaughan urged the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, to make a “brave” choice. He suggested including some lesser-known players who are currently in top form, like Shivam Dube, instead of relying solely on established names.

“This is where Ajit Agarkar can be brave. Whoever he picks, it will be a formidable team. I think it is the right time to be brave and pick a not-so-well-known names,” the former England captain said.
