Shikhar Dhawan Dropped: The Indian cricket board on Tuesday (December 27) named the squads for the upcoming T20I and ODI series against SriLanka. A lot of changes were seen in the squad with several regular names missing. The biggest name absent from the ODI squad was Shikhar Dhawan. One of the senior members of Team India, Dhawan was expected to lose his spot following Ishan Kishan’s double-century against Bangladesh. After being omitted from the Indian squad, the veteran batter took to Instagram to share a motivational video. However, the left-handed batter soon deleted the video. To note, Dhawan has not represented India in T20Is since 2021. This year, he managed to score just 688 runs in 22 matches. The left-handed batter remained part of the leadership group. He also led the team in the absence of KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma. But he couldn’t score enough runs to keep his spot. It must be noted that he also led the team in the ODI series against New Zealand last month.
Dhawan also had a poor run against Bangaldesh. The senior batter also failed to score runs in NewZealand. Several cricket experts and pundits have also questioned his strike rate on previous occasions. With Ishan Kishan banging the doors for the Indian squad. Dhawan’s ODI career seems to be in jeopardy.
With the 2023 World Cup less than a year away, the doors might not be completely shut on Dhawan. In IPL 2023, Dhawan will be leading Punjab Kings. The senior batter can press his case for a recall by scoring heavily in the competition. He is a proven performer in ICC tournaments and the team management would want a senior like him in the World Cup.
