Sherfane Rutherford sends West Indies in Super Eight, New Zealand teeter on T20 World Cup exit

Rutherford's brilliance with the bat, coupled with a strong bowling and fielding performance, has propelled WI into the next stage of the competition.

The West Indies secured a thrilling victory over New Zealand in a tense encounter at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad, booking their place in the Super Eights of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Sherfane Rutherford late blitz

After a shaky start with the bat, West Indies looked down and out. However, a sensational late-innings knock from Sherfane Rutherford completely shifted the momentum.

The 25-year-old Guyanese batsman smashed an unbeaten 68 off just 39 balls, including five sixes and two fours in the final five overs.

This incredible display, a strong contender for the innings of the tournament, propelled the West Indies to a competitive total of 149.

New Zealand batting woes

Chasing a modest target, New Zealand‘s batting lineup faltered. Despite a promising start from Finn Allen, they lacked a substantial partnership and the aggressive intent displayed by Rutherford.

Key wickets of Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell put them further behind the required run rate.

West Indies dominate with ball and field

The West Indies bowlers, led by Alzarri Joseph and Akeal Hosein, capitalized on New Zealand’s batting woes. Close fielding, with excellent catches and sharp work from the in-field, further stifled the Black Caps’ chase.

Mitchell Santner’s late flurry of big hits wasn’t enough to prevent a heartbreaking defeat for New Zealand.

Disappointment for New Zealand

This loss leaves New Zealand’s World Cup hopes hanging by a thread. Their batting woes throughout the tournament have been a cause for concern, and their performance against the West Indies was another example of their struggles.

They now face an uphill battle to qualify for the Super Eights.
