The ‘GOAT’ of spin bowling Shane Warne claimed 700th wickets today in 2006 to register himself as the first bowler to accomplish his milestone in Test cricket.
In a match between England and Australia, Warne claimed his 700th wicket by dismissing Andrew Stauss in Melbourne.
The Australia leg-spinner announced in the lead-up that he would be retiring from international cricket at the conclusion of the series. He entered the fourth Test of the Ashes at his home ground Melbourne Cricket Ground with 699 wickets.
“As it turned out, whoever writes my scripts is doing an unbelievable job,” said Warne after achieving the milestone.
“I’ve just been sitting there since we started batting just shaking my head – I can’t believe it happened to be honest. It was a pretty amazing day.”
Warner went on to dismiss four more batters to clinch the 37th five-wicket haul. England collapsed at 159 in the first innings. In the second innings, Warne added two more scalps.
Overall, the Australian spinner had 708 wickets in the Test career with an average of 25.41.
