Mohsin Naqvi, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chief, has claimed that he won’t be the one making decisions regarding the Pakistan cricket team’s captaincy. Currently, Babar Azam is Pakistan’s white-ball (T20I and ODI) captain, while Shan Masood leads the Test team.
Pakistan’s performance and captaincy
This year, Pakistan’s performance has been extremely poor. They’ve just won one series across all formats; that too came against Ireland. They played 2 T20I series against New Zealand (losing 4-1 once and drawing to their ‘F’ side 2-2), and against England, they suffered a 2-0 defeat in T20Is (two matches were washed off).
The worst was the loss to the USA at the T20 World Cup and their subsequent elimination from the group stage. Reports have suggested that Mohammad Rizwan could become the all-format captain soon after Bangladesh beat Pakistan 2-0 earlier in the month. But nothing has been confirmed yet.
Claiming that he’ll be blamed for the team’s performance, Naqvi claimed that he won’t decide on the captaincy himself. “The decision regarding captaincy will be made after consultation with the coaches, mentors and selection committee. A workshop is scheduled for September 22, where everyone will be invited to give their suggestions, and decisions will be made afterward” the PCB Chief said to media in Lahore during an inspection of the Gaddafi Stadium.
Naqvi is not ready to take blame
Despite being the most powerful man in the PCB, Mohsin Naqvi doesn’t want to take any responsibility for Pakistan’s failures. “I know that if there is any mistake, it falls on me. If the team does not perform well, if there is a selection mistake, or if the coach loses, it will all reflect on me,” Naqvi stated.
Now, it’ll be fascinating to see how he reacts if Pakistan beats England in the upcoming 3-match Test series. Will he take the credit for the victory, and who’ll he blame for the loss?
